Objectives of the Course This course has been designed to equip the students in the department with basic language skills. It aims to develop the students’ ability to understand the language of study and express themselves in basic situations by making use of four skills.
Course Content The course content is enriched with lectures and exercises on reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in French.

1 Introduction, greeting, introducing oneself, asking names, where we come from and answering. Pronunciation, alphabet.
2 Asking and answering questions for self-introduction and getting to know others. Nationality adjectives, identifying languages. Learning to spell out.
3 Asking and answering questions to get to know others. Verb conjugations (s’appeler and être), Masculine and feminine forms of nationality adjectives.
4 Definite articles. Countries, continents. Use of prepositions in front of country names.
5 Numbers, counting, giving your phone number and email address. Learning some French personnalities. Communicating in class.
6 Week 6 Contacts, salutation. Formal and informal relations. Usage of “tu” and “vous”. Verb conjugation (avoir). Negation (ne ... pas). Possessive adjectives. Indefinite articles. Days and times of the day. Asking the price of something.
7 Midterm
8 Months. Interrogative adjective (quel). Some signs and ponctuation. Giving some personal information.
9 Talking about pleasures, hobbies and dreams. Conjugating the verbs ending with –er. Neighbors of France and the seas surrounding France.
10 Some French symbols. Talking about a place, describing it. Asking why and giving an explanation. Prepositions of place. Some places in a city.
11 Asking questions to get information. Describing a route, giving directions. Cardinal numbers. Conjugating the verbs “descendre”, “prendre”, “aller”.
12 Writing a postal card. Demonstrative adjectives. Giving impressions of a place. Talking about holidays. Talking about weather. Conjugating the verb “venir”.
13 Revision of the previous week. Reading comprehension exercise. Speaking exercise of giving directions.
14 Talking about activities, job. Some professions. Masculine and feminine forms of professions. Conjugating the verb “faire”.
