Objectives of the Course The purpose of this course is to examine the important events, processes, currencies of thought and individuals that have left their mark on Turkish political life from the 19th century to the mids of the 20th century. Turkish Political Life I course starts by the examination of the influence of the political events of the late Ottoman Empire period on the major political characteristics of the Republic of Turkey, continues with the analysis of the political changes that the newly established Turkish state put into practice, and ends with a discussion of the political developments leading to the transition to multi-party system. The subjects that will be covered during the course of the lesson include particularly the Ottoman modernization efforts, Turkish-Islamic political culture and civilization, Turkish constitutionalist movements, Atatürk and Kemalism, single-party period policies, global and local economic developments of the time, conditions preparing the ground for transition to multi-party life and democratic party experience.
