Objectives of the Course This course is devoted to the examination of the major political ideologies that have placed their mark on contemporary political life in the ideas and actions of political groups, movements and individuals. The course will examine the major political ideologies with a look at the historical conditions that have produced them, philosophers and schools of thought that have nurtured them, their variation across time and circumstances, and interactions with one another, and their degree of influence on the con-tours of modern political life. Ideologies will be discussed in the course with reference to the ideal route they support in political and socio-economic life, their critique towards one another, their ap-proach towards the challenging issues of global political environment, and the major controversies they have produced. The course will not be limited with a theoretical handling of the ideologies, their empirical manifestations and experiences will also be examined.

In more specific terms, the course will examine how various ideologies interpret and approach to such conventional themes of political science as freedom, equality, justice, rule of law, rule by many, politi-cal leadership, welfare state, distributive justice, the role and the functions of the state, big state vs. small state controversy, religion and tradition in politics, gender equality and so on and so forth.
Course Content The content of the course covers those contemporary political ideologies of liberalism, conservatism, social democracy, nationalism, feminism, ecologism, anarchism. These ideologies will be investigated in the course with regards to their formative aspects in ideational, historical and sociological terms; their major advocacies in political, economic and social life; their posture in the face of clashes with practical challenges and other ideologies; the varieties they have produced and the unique features they possess among others.
