Objectives of the Course To introduce advanced and contemporary model making materials and methods.
Course Content The course aims to help students build tangible three-dimensional scaled models of their architectural design elements, i.e., spaces, building masses, and objects.
Course Methods and Techniques It is important to consult the instructor while working and building the models during the process of execution. Please do not just submit a complete model that you built on your own. You cannot submit something as homework that you completed independently of the instructor. You should have brought incomplete model pieces, parts, components and raw materials during the earlier weeks. The purpose of the course is to discuss, think, research and find materials TOGETHER, and then construct a new method that we will decide upon TOGETHER. Please do not try to reshape the course to your own liking. You must earn the right to submit homework.

1 Introduction TOOLS, INSTRUMENTS & MATERIALS Manual Tools: Precision cutting knives and glue applicators (injectors) Cutting mat, straight-edge rulers for cutting. Carving and sculpting instruments. Assorted sanding materials, different grades of sandpapers. Digital Tools: A series of vector based and solid modelling software is used in drawing for 2D shapes and 3D forms for fabrication through advanced digital manufacturing technologies. AutoCAD, Fusion 360, Adobe Illustrator, Rhino, Blender, Solidworks, ThinkerCad Note: Each student should utilize a digital model-making technology at least once on one aspect of any assignment. Materials: Variety of heavy stock cardboard, colored papers, and transparent acrylic sheets, plastic/acrylic/styrene sheets, and laths. Corrugated cardboard – Oluklu Mukavva, Styrofoam sheet – Strafor köpük levha. Various wood, styrene, plastic, and synthetic model-making materials. Casting Materials Plaster Gypsum (Alçı), Sculpting/forming Wax, Soap Bar for carving the m Necessary documents are provided in the classes
2 A Lighting Fixture Model Visit the Sanayi Street in Ulus to observe and research lighting fixture components. Scale 1/10, 1/20 Choose or design a lighting fixture of your choice. This is not a design course, so do not overdo to design, but put more emphasis on the building aspect of the model. Do not build the model yet, but submit a hand-drawn proposal of your plan and program only. In the proposal, you are expected to describe the material, size, color, texture and the generic working principles of your product and its model. Material - Decide on the material that best represents the lighting fixture of your choice, with its color, texture, etc. Method - Sketch and show how you will put the material together. Optionally, bring sample materials. Submittal – A4-size hand-drawn, colored page(s). Please upload a photo or a scanned digital image of the hand-drawn page and bring the page to the class too.
3 A Lighting Fixture Model Bring your draft model continue to work with the instructor   Start   building the model you have presented earlier week. It is important that you work with the instructor.

5 A Furniture Model Bring raw materials and present draft drawings. Types of furniture that can be built: chair, table, armchair, bench, couch, coffee table, cabinet. Wood lath / slat and various upholstery items would be very handy in building these types of models. Pick or design a piece of furniture of your choice. This is not a design course, so do not overdo to design, but put more emphasis on the building aspect of the model.

8 Architectural and Geometric Form Development Techniques with Paper Creasing and Folding Art Please bring to class: * At least one sheet of 200-gram white cardboard (A4 or a similar size). * A model-making knife with a sharp blade, and a mat Before class, research and observe the forms and techniques used in paper-folding art. You may search using variations of the keywords: “paper cutting, creasing, scoring and folding art and techniques, and kirigami.” Please note: it is absolutely critical to understand that this is not origami but an architectural and geometrical, explorative study.

10 Building a kitchen or bathroom appliance/fixture Bring carving tools and a medium that you can carve and sculpt into a model. A large size of soap bar, a block of candle wax, are usually good mediums. You can even try carving a wooden block or a brick. You are advised to utilize manual sculpting by carving and molding techniques for this type of work. Build a sink, lavatory, bathtub, toilet seat, fridge, stove-furnace-oven, or a fireplace by hand carving only.

12 Final Project Bring your draft models You are expected to conclude the semester with a comprehensive model-building project that integrates and demonstrates all learning outcomes from in-class practices and previous assignments. Ideally, the final project should consist of a building model that represents both overall massing and interior spatial organization (e.g., a stage, exhibition stand, residence, office, or public facility). Alternatively, you may choose to construct a model of an iconic example of contemporary architecture or a historic building. Models developed for your design studio projects may also be further developed and     execute    d as the final project for this course.
